Marvel Teasing Possible Fallout Crossover Event


Reports suggest that Marvel Comics and Bethesda Studios – developer of the popular Fallout series of games – are about to announce a partnership between the two companies. The exact nature of that collaboration, however, and what medium it will occur in has fan minds racing.
Set in a post-apocalyptic United States, the Fallout series has drawn inspiration from many different visions of future, including the Atomic Age science-fiction that inspired Marvel Comics. Radiation in Fallout can give people super powers or transform them into monstrous mutants and many have commented upon the resemblance between Fallout‘s Super Mutant enemies and The Incredible Hulk. The most recent game, Fallout 4, had a storyline where the player could become a superhero, taking up the identity of The Silver Shroud – a mystery man inspired by The Shadow. Players with a high Intelligence can even take a special perk – Nerd Rage – which effectively turns them into Bruce Banner, developing super-strength and increased durability whenever their health drops below a certain point.
The hints of an official partnership were dropped in a pair of Tweets by both companies, which are pictured below. The message from Marvel Comics presents the classic “Please Stand By” loading screen from Fallout, but with the symbols in the outer circles replaced with the emblems of Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Captain America. A reply from the official Fallout account presented images of Vault Boy in his Action Boy persona and his “Nerd Rage” mode, saying that whatever was coming next was sure to be “MARVEL-ous.”


Given that Marvel Comics’ post includes the #MarvelComics hashtag, it seems likely that the partnership will involve some kind of comic book set in the Fallout universe. This has not stopped fan speculation, however, that the teased project could be some kind of Marvel Comics inspired video game made using the Fallout 4 engine. This reasoning behind this is the popularity of two Marvel Comics series – Old Man Logan and Old Man Hawkeye – which are set in a post-apocalyptic Marvel Comics Universe.
The most wild speculation involves Bethesda Studio’s recent acquisition of Battlecry Studios – a company which had worked on an Overwatch-style shooting game that was abandoned. While an Overwatch clone utilizing the heroes and villains of Marvel Comics would likely be a serious moneymaker, it seems like something of a quantum leap and completely discounts the use of Fallout imagery in the official announcements. Thankfully, fans will not have long to wait and see what all the fuss is about regardless of what product is being promoted.
